The National Park Service has announced that the
results of an Environmental Impact Assessment has found the installation of a
water delivery system at the Chains Recreation Area, just east of Glen Canyon
Dam and north of the Hanging Gardens hiking trail, will not have any
significant impact on the immediate environment around the project. The Page-Lechee
Water Supply Project will pump water from Lake Powell
into the Page water supply system. The
city of Page
pumps 100-thousand gallons of aqua to the LeChee
Chapter in the Navajo Nation each day.
The project is designed to handle LeChee’s
water needs and supplement Page’s water supply.
The city’s current water supply delivery system dates back to the
construction of Glen
Canyon Dam in the late
1950’s and early 1960’s. City Manager Bo
Thomas says that once completed, the new water system will provide a crucial
backup to the city’s decades old water delivery system. The allocation of water to Page will remain
the same. Officials deemed the system
vulnerable due to its age. The project
will serve as a more reliable back up system for the city. Up to six boreholes will be drilled into the
lake’s bed to supply water. A conveyance
pipeline will then be built and placed along Highway-89 to a tie-in point with
Page’s existing water supply system and treatment plant.

Arizona state
legislators met in Special Session again yesterday to whittle away at the
state’s $1.6-billion budget deficit.
Lawmakers had been considering the implementation of a special 3-year
sales tax to generate revenue but did not appear to have enough votes to move
the proposal forward. That left making
more budget cuts the primary focus of the session. Legislators were expected to see how they
could slash another $200-million from the state budget. The special state tax increase proposal had
been championed by Governor Jan Brewer since she came to office nearly 1-year
ago. 3rd District State
Representative Doris Goodale says the budget
situation is so dire that Arizona
may not be able to meet its financial responsibilities as early as
February. Goodale
says banks may also be on the verge of lowering the state’s credit rating,
making it difficult and more expensive to borrow.

Arizona has one of
the largest senior citizen populations in the country. A new report from AARP shows that one-third
of Americans, most of them women, are acting as a caregiver for a loved one,,
sometimes putting careers on hold as well as dealing with other hurdles. AARP Regional spokeswoman Ann Black says the
report found caring for an older family member consumes about 19-hours each
week. It’s a burden, she says, that can
be alleviated with planning. AARP
recommends using the holidays as a time to bring up the subject of long-term
care and the nuances associated with it.

The Page Tourism Board met this week to discuss placing
the operation of the Page Tourism Bureau out to bid. The Tourism Bureau is overseen by a
five-member volunteer Board and a full-time salaried director. It is currently managed by Director Dwayne
Cassidy. Page Vice-Mayor John Cook says
the goal is to enhance the Tourism Bureau and ultimately bring more tourists
into the Page-Lake Powell area. Cook
says that the city is open to continuing having the Bureau overseen by a Director,
or contracting with a private firm to enhance it. Some Council and Board members have expressed
a desire to give the Tourism Bureau more of a presence on the internet by
improving its web page and participating in other websites like Twitter and Facebook.
